Adaptec version 4 is totally incompatible with XP as you found out.
You have to totally remove Adaptect files (start with the Add/Remove icon in
the control panel) and even may have to remove registry sections.
Then buy and install Roxio version 6.

Once you have Adaptec cleaned out of your system, boot to the Safe Mode and
go to the Device Manager and remove your CD drives.
Then reboot and Windows should re-find and setup your CD's again. Then
install Roxio 5 or higher. With version 5, you will need patches from their
web site to be able to find the CD-RW and make it work.

The "engineer" that installed Adaptec should have known better, if you paid
for his services.
You might also download a program from MS to check the compatibility of your
software & hardware to XP. The program is called Windows XP advisor, but be
aware that this is a large (30 meg) download. Do a search for XP advisor on
the MS site for the download.

irritating error messages which are no help at all! Did you have any luck
short of a complete re-install, which I can't face, knowing it will lead to
more unsolvable problems! I didn't understand the suggestion re "go into
registry and finish the article and run 31460 as well" What is that all
about?
