Some thumbnails shaded

Some thumbnails are "grayed out" in the selection. I'm referring primarily
to .jpeg files. Some - they're clear as a bell, other a visible, buy
"grayed" and I don't know why. I've checked file extensions and they
"match" so to speak.
Any suggestions?
