Lost Shortcuts

When I turned on my computer today, all of my desktop and
start menu shortcuts were replaced with .lnk files that
Windows does not know how to use. When I try to open
them, Windows says that it cannot open the file and
prompts me to select an appropriate program. How can I
get my shortcuts back?
