This is usually a result of placing entire program or folders on the desktop. XP will then take time to load the entire contents to the desktop before ending it's cycle. The desktop should never contain folders or programs only shortcuts. As well the startup in msconfig may have so many programs loading that run in the background it takes time to initiate them. go>start\run and type in msconfig. Now click the startup tab. It is absolutely unecessary to load anything but the bare essentials like your anti-virus program. There is no need what so ever to load Spybot Search and Destroy on boot or any other such program. You can start these when you need them by clicking their icons. Sounds like you need to do some configuration. e:mail me if you need more help. Good luck
