Your Maxtor is probably either dead or dying. Suggest you use the
Maxtor diagnostic program disk provided with the drive to run a check
on the drive. The disk is a bootable floppy. If you don't have one,
you can download a disk image from the Maxtor web site.
Seems like you already spent some money trying to access the drive so
I guess you need to determine how valuable your data is. There are
places that can retrieve data from a dead drive but are very
expensive.
