taking forever to get past the logon screen-XP Home

Hi
Even when I use the Guest account, the thing sits there for 20 or more
seconds(Dell P4-2000) saying 'loading personal preferences'....spybot,
k-mart and all.

anyone have ideas on why the delay?

ctl-alt-del does not show that much running and, when I disable the
start up items, it has very little effect.
