Hi,

First of all it is bad to put your email address in any NG. Heard of Swen worm, backwards spells newS.

And it's pretty hard to screw up this, and should be easy enough to undo it. Has he been stetting Restore Points? If so just go where your System Information file is and Open System Restore. Choose a previous date to the trouble and revert back to it.

If he has not been backing up his system, and it's a "Call" brand, go into the BIOS and change the the first boot device to CD-ROM, put the first of install CD in the tray and Restart the system. If it is a "Call" brand, choose "r" and "r" the second time to do basically a "repair install". Don't choose "f" or whatever or he will lose his data, and settings and driver updates, and SP's and I.E. & O.E., and other "stuff". And that takes all the fun out of it. Getting everything back exactly will take a good day for someone that knows what they are doing. And it really helps to have another computer to get a jump start so all of the Megs of everything is downloaded again.

If it is a normal, like out of the box, retail XP clean install that he had, you have one CD and do a repair install by changing the BIOS and booting with the installation CD.

Good luck,

Windows XP Home. My son called to tell me his Start
button quit working recently and ask for help, because
I'm suppose to know all. I've never run into this
problem before and couldn't find anything on Microsoft's
Knowledge Base about it. He can get into his programs
through My Computer or Windows Explorer but gets no
reaction at all from the Start button. Has anyone else
heard of this problem and its solution?

Dumb Answer: Yes, I paid for my antivirus already.
Smart Question: Did you check your email?
Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
