I have managed to up-date my graphics card but no improvement (ATI X800). I
have an Asus motherboard (K8V) and Soundmax sound driver. However, I cannot
work out how to update these. Soundmax say I have to use the Asus website
and that does not tell you how to actually do it or which download I should
use.

If you go to -> http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us then with the drop down lists go Motherboards -> Socket 754 -> K8V.

Then in a horizontal line there's a bunch of tabs for drivers, that will show all the drivers.

Avoid the beta drivers, and look for Windows XP ones that have the highest version number... It's a nightmare site to navigate.

I think if I update these then this will give me a good start to see what
else might be wrong. (I had an overclocking failed message once so am
thinking maybe it is a problem with the fan). Would be grateful for any
advice you can give.

Make sure all the frequencies have been put back to their defaults - troubleshooting overclocked hardware can be annoying. 8-) Generally if a fan is on it's way out it'll make a lot of noise too (assuming it didn't just die on the spot), open the case up and make sure they're all spinning - if it is a heat problem then leaving the case open may help rule that out.

A few other things to try would be to update the motherboard's BIOS - also on the website, just make sure to read all the docs at least twice.
