Electronic Arts' PGATour 486 seems to install on my Dell 2400 XP Pro desktop, but the DOS window just appears briefly, then closes. I'm running the 2400, which has one graphics/audio chip, at 800X600.
Used to work okay with Win95 at 800X600, but selecting the Compatibility Wizard for Win95 and selecting the various options doesn't help. With a DOS command prompt, typing CD \PGA486, then PGA486 (comand), brings up two text lines in the DOS window:
DOS/46W Professional Protected Mode Runtime Version 1.97
C:PGA486> (c) Rational Systems Inc. 1990-1994
^
The cursor appears at the ^ point above and DOS/46W, if it's running, doesn't do anything further. (A carriage return just splits the second text line.)
I've made most of the Properties changes suggested here:
C:\PGA486\FreeLists - adeel420 - [adeel420] Running DOS games on Windows XP and 2K.htm
but nothing changes. Haven't tried the configuration files changes suggested about halfway through this freelist file. Prefer not getting into system changes that might crash my computer, etc. etc., and would rather download a fix from Microsoft rather than potentially unsafe Internet files.
Any suggestions? Thanks for any advice.
John
Windows XP doesn't include DOS of anykind... Only a basic emulation layer which is pretty useless for most games.
DOSBox is the emulator of choice http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/
