"non responsive icons" and "by installing the manual patch before clicking
the icon the game works fine" is a pretty sure sign that you have a virus.
Add in the fact that you admit to using Kazaa (a virus infested playground),
and the case is closed.

Some work when installed but as soon as other software is used or PC turned
off i get the standard XP error report messages.
