Online games

HI. I have been playing online games without many problems. Two weeks ago i had my hard drive reformatted, because i picked up a virus that would not allow windows to load. I decided to have windows XP pro as my os. I used to have win me.
Every time i try to play counter strike,& dod on steam and call of duty, i have terrible lag. On steams cs and dod i manage to get onto a server then all i get is a looping sound and this unables me to move because of the lag.
I have a broadband connection which works fine on other online activities also i have a very low ping. I feel this must have some connection to haveing XP as my os. Could you please advice me on this issue.
