i made myself an usb-stick with winpe 2.0 to deploy an xp embedded image in
wim format. as long as i deploy the image to a CompactFlash i got no
problems, also deploying it to a harddisk up to 20GB i got no problems but
then i tried to deploy the image to 40GB and a 60GB harddisk and encounterd
that when i bootup from the harddisks for the first time and create the ewf
volume through 'rundll32 ewfdll.dll ConfigureEwf' and then reboot the pc
again the system does not get up again, the display stays black.
booting from a linux cd i then found out that when creating the ewf volume
the entry for the first (system) partition in the partition table of the mbr
gots changed in addition to add an entry for the second (ewf) partition. in
detail it was the Cylinder-head-sector address of the last sector in the
partition that gots changed.
i than tried to change the value back to the one before adding the ewf and
with the 60GB HD this works fine and the embedded system comes up again but
with the 40GB HD i also have to delete the ewf partition to get the system
up again but now in ram reg mode. doing the rundll32 command again allways
leads to a non booting system.
when deploying the same system in dos as a ghost image i don't get this
problems.
i will be really interessed in understandig where the problem has its
origin.
is it a problem to create an partition with diskpart in winpe? or resides
the problem in the rundll32 command which destroys the partitiontable?
