Windows security patch KB896666 breaks remote assistance

on a XPe SP2 machine, but not on a XP pro SP2.... why?

The error I get when I try to open remote assistance is a dialog box with
the title "Microsoft Internet Explorer"
! A program could not start. Please try again

I've tried net stop rdsessmgr.exe
sessmgr.exe -service
net srart rdsessmgr.exe

but that didn't help. I still got that error when I tried remote assistance
