XP locks up when a CD is inserted...

Ok, here it goes...
I have a client with a Multimedia XP, it is an HP. It has a Sony DVD+RW
combo drive.
Almost new.
He brought it to me because everytime he inserts a CD, or a DVD, or any
type of CD into this drive, and it locks up.
I know it is a software issue because I have been able to get it to
play any CD in safe mode, but as soon as you boot it up in normal mode,
it locks up.
I have uninstalled his software, (DVD Decrypter, and DVD Shrink) and it
works fine for the whole time it is on, but after you reboot it, or turn
the machine off and then turn it on after a period of time, it locks up
again.
I have read through several threads where several other people have had
the same issues, and no one seems to think it might have to do with
Windows Multimedia, but I think it does.
Any Ideas, suggestions are very welcomed.
I will try anything at this point.
