I guess Misery Loves Company, but its good to know you
are not alone, or someone else is in the same boat.
I recently built a new computer and performed a fresh
install of windows XP Pro SP1 as the OS.
MOTHERBOARD : MSI-KM3M-V
BIOS VERSION : VIA KM266 Pro/KM400/ KM400A (From Box)
Phoenix-Award Bios V6.00PG (From Display)
W7061VMS V3.0 042004 13:20:41
04/20/2004 KM400-8235-6A6LYM4BC-00
CHIPSET : VIA VT8237
CPU: ATHLON XP 1700+
RAM: 500 Meg (w/ 32 meg shared)
OS : Microsoft Windows XP SP1 using NTFS
(OEM version purchased with all the other stuff)
PRIMARY IDE CONFIGURATION:
MASTER : HDD 80 GIG
SLAVE : (NONE)
SECONDARY IDE CONFIGURATION :
MASTER : (First Try)LiteOn SOHW-1633S 16X DVD +/-R/+-RW
Drive SOHW-1633
MASTER : (Second Try) Optorite DD1205 12X DVD +/-RW (mfg
July 2004).
SLAVE : Memorex 48MAX-244816A CD R/+/-RW
The DVD drive can be used to install WIN XP SP1, but
after installation of OS
The OS no longer recognizes the DVD Drive as anything
other than an unknown
IDE device (My Computer) In the device manage WinXP
correctly identifies both of the
DVD's tried but displays a yellow exclamation point.
Checking properties I
get: "This drive cannot start (Code 10).
Same results obtained with both DVD writers tried.
(Can't read, write, does not even recognise it as a CD-
rom drive.)
This makes it impossible to load any device drivers, or
additional programs.
IN Addition The Memorex unit which is a DVD player and CD
ROM R/RW device cannot
read CDs even though Windows XP Device Manager reports it
a fully operational.
The Memorex, LiteOn, and Optorite are all allegedly "WIN
XP Compatible" according
to their respective manufacturers. MS lists these
devices as WIN XP compatible.
I have checked the cables, master/slave jumpers, power
connectors. Even swapped
out Memory Modules, and the symptoms remain.
HOWEVER:
The Memorex, LiteOn, and Optorite are all correctly
recognised and work well when
installed on this machine with Win98SE, AND on other
machines using Win XP SP2, Win 2000.
My Problem is with WIN XP, but what have I done wrong, or
what haven't I done.
all help appreciated
