It happens with all programs. If I play a song on the Media player and try
to type this email for example I get the same problem.

No the sound (sound is OB anyway) and the keyboard don't share the same IRQ.
But...my network adapter and sound (which are both OB) are sharing the same
IRQ. Would that make sence? Could the network adapter clash with the sound,
as I am on a home network and using an ADSL modem, which is always
connected.

I think your right about the two devices using the same IRQ, but as their
both OB how do I go about changing one of the IRQ positions?

Thanks very much Jerry. You've shed a lot of light on the problem. I was
starting to get a bit frustrated having been trying to solve it for the last
week!
