This is about a Dell Inspiron 8100 malfunction.
The machine was made and shipped 10th Oct 2001, less that
3 years ago.
It was originally shipped with Windows Millennium,

Last month the hard drive suffered a sudden and
catastrophic failure (a rather unexpected on at that).

An authorised Dell repairer replaced this with a double
sized one and loaded Windows XP Home Edition.

At first everything went fine after the initial
downloading of the Windows updates and after all the
critical updated had been obtained.

Then, suddenly, whenever you closed the lid or tried to
put the machine into standby mode the following message
began to appear.

"System Standby Failed
The device driver for the 'standard 101/102 keyboard or
Microsoft Natural PS/2 keyboard' is preventing the
machine from entering standby.
Please close all applications and try again.
If the problem persists, you may need to update this
driver."

We don't know how to correct this!
We tried closing all applications (all the icons in the
system tray were closed) but that had no effect.

If somebody has experience of this, or knows where to
start looking for the error, we'd be glad of some advice
please.

When the problem sprang up, the machine had no Dell
software on it having just got Windows XP so, thinking
that <this> may have been the problem, we downloaded the
latest touch pad and keyboard drivers from Dell's web
site.
All that did was make the message refer instead to 'Dell
Enhanced Quietkey PS2 with DellTouch' instead
of 'standard 101/102 keyboard or Microsoft Natural PS/2
keyboard'!

Oh, by the way, I have not enabled Windows Messenger, as
I don't fully trust this, not knowing exactly what it may
do in the background. Should I have?
