Chris Morris,
"I installed Vista Ultimate on the laptop and about 5 other programs"
1. Did you install Vista as an upgrade (over the preinstalled OS) or a
"fresh install"?
If you did an upgrade, you may still have many XP files & folders still on
your notebook, plus all the MS updates associated with that preinstalled OS.
2. Since this is a new Dell Laptop, you probably have some hidden partitions
that are taking up space on your HDD.
MS will report an 80GB (manufacturer's measurement) HDD, at approximately
78GB's in size.
Dell's Hidden Partitions may be more or less the following:
Restore Partition & Diagnostics:
Approximately 5 GB's of space (maybe a little less/more).
3. If you remove some "Dell" pre-installed software using Add/Remove in the
Control Panel, some of the folders and files inside them, relating to those
removed programs may be still present on your notebook's HDD.
So in a way, MS would report your HDD, as only having approximately 73 GB's
or LESS, available space for a new installation of an Operating System,
program applications, and Data files to your notebook. Not the 80 GB that
you think you have available.

I've got a brand new Dell with an 80 gig hard drive and I've run into
trouble with Vista eating all my space up. I installed Vista Ultimate
on
the laptop and about 5 other programs that should leave me with tons
of left over space but I now have only 14 Gigs left out of 80...
What the heck is that all about? Anyone else out there experiencing
the same or know why it's doing that?
Chris Morris
