Hi DSH:
To be honest, your question belongs in the Acronis User Forum:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=65
Short answer: Like most backup programs, TI instructs you to make a bootable recovery CD. Use that, if necessary, to boot your computer and navigate to the image you want to restore. Test the CD to make sure it 'sees' your external drive.

Let's say you are using a backup program -- I'm currently giving Acronis.
True Image 10.0 a 15-day trial -- to an external drive -- an Iomega drive in
my case.
I'm doing this in Windows XP Professional SP2.
Does one need to make the external drive bootable?
If so, why -- and if not, why not?
Thanks.
Or, is there a better microsoft newsgroup to post this to?
