Re: RUN command missing from start menu

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Did you reboot? Quite often you have to reboot for registry changes to take
affect. When in doubt, reboot. It can never hurt.

Look at these two reigistry keys, if they both exist. Look for a Value Name
called NoRun. If NoRun exists, the Value Data should be set to 0. If NoRun
does not exist it's the same as being set to 0.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Value Name: NoRun
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 (or not in the registry) = The policy is disabled or not configured. The
Run command appears.
1 = The policy is enabled. The Run command is removed.

<quote>
Description
Removes the Run command from the Start menu and removes the New Task (Run)
command from Task Manager. Also, users with extended keyboards can no longer
display the Run dialog box by pressing the Application key (the key with the
Windows logo) + R.

This entry stores the setting of the Remove Run menu from Start Menu Group
Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry with a value of 1 when
you enable the policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not
configured, Group Policy deletes this entry from the registry, and the
system behaves as though the value is 0.

This entry affects the specified interfaces only. It does not prevents users
from using other methods to run programs.

Change method
To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds
to the Remove Run menu from Start Menu Group Policy (User
Configuration\AdministrativeTemplates\Start Menu & Taskbar).

See this first....

Registry Editing has been disabled by your administrator
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakuirest.htm

....then try the .reg file stuff.

1. Click Start, Run and type this command exactly as given below:
(better - Copy and paste)

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v
DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

The line wrapped, copy the entire line from the above link and paste it
into Start | Run and then reboot.

I only included it so that you could see the entrie line.

If that does not work...

Download regtools.vbs from here...

regtools.vbs - Disable/Enable Registry Editing tools in Windows
http://www.dougknox.com/security/scripts_desc/regtools.htm

© Doug Knox - rev 01/10/2000
This code may be freely distributed/modified.

Usage: Download regtools.vbs Save the file to the folder of your choice.
Double click the VBS file. The VB Script file will check for the
appropriate value and if not found will create it. If the value was
found, it will be toggled to its opposite state and you will be informed
that you need to log off/back on or restart your computer. One note.
This change is made in
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System.
Disabling the tools takes effect immediately. Enabling requires a
restart. This script can be viewed in Notepad or any text editor, as to
the specific Registry key and value that are updated. Your antivirus
software may report this script as potentially malicious, or a possible
virus. This is because the script writes to the System Registry.

It uses a vbs file instead of the REG command. After using regtools.vbs,
reboot.

Ok thx,
I restored my clock back but when I click on the items on your link to
enable my registry iI get a box says run or save. when I click run I get
the same error that registry has been disabled. The same happens when I
click on the other for the on/off. I get the same error telling me the
reg editor has been disabled by the administrator. I also get the same
error when I use the Win key + R.
Any more suggestions? Thx, Sweets

213. Disable or Enable Registry Editing Tools

Click on Enable
for disableregistrytoolsundo.reg

Right click disableregistrytoolsundo.reg and select Merge.

And last, my clock is showing military time, which I dont want

Start | Settings | Control Panel | Regional and Language Options |
Customize button | Time tab |

Change any UPPERCASE H to lowercase h.

The lowercase h denotes the 12 hour clock and uppercase H denotes the
24 hour clock.

H = Hours without leading zeros for single digit hours (24 hour clock).
HH = Hours with leading zeros for single digit hours (24 hour clock).
h = Hours without leading zeros for single digit hours (12 hour clock).
hh = Hours with leading zeros for single digit hours (12 hour clock).

If you do not see the format you want in Time format, follow these
guidelines:
Display time in a 12-hour format: Type lowercase h or hh for the hour

Display leading zeros in single-digit hours: Type two characters, hh

Suppress the display of leading zeros in single-digit hours, minutes,
or seconds: Type a single lowercase letter, such as h, m, or s

Display a single letter to indicate AM or PM: Type lowercase t

Display two letters to indicate AM or PM: Type lowercase tt

Display text: Type single quotation marks (') around text

To change the way your computer displays the time

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/int_pr_time.mspx?mfr=true

HKCU\Control Panel\International
Value Name: iTime
Data Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = 12-hour clock
1 = 24-hour clock
