If you have installed Windows XP Service pack 2 (SP2) the messenger service
will have already been disabled. This service is imply used to send messages
via networks and is regularly used by spammers.
If you don't have service pack 2 installed then, as Billy suggested in his
post obtain and run 'shoot the messenger'. Of course you could also disable
it manually via services in administrative tools section of control panel.
However, if you are not sure what you are doing stick with either SP2 or
shoot the messenger.
