Well David, I want to thank you and others for the help. I did an "upgrade"
install of XP, (I hate to admit - I have no idea how to configure this thing
to boot directly from the CD) and it appears that the Task Scheduler and
everything else is in pristine condition. It appears that I didn't lose
anything at all. Yippee ;-)) Now I guess I'll have to download all the
updates from WU again.

If the installation CD is older I don't think that SFC will accept it, it will prompt you to supply a CD with the same service pack as is installed. ... Windows File Protection keeps a list of protected files and their version numbers and I don't think that it would replace the files with earlier versions. ...
