If you check the System configuration utility, "services",
you'll see what is running. One really needs to know what
you can uncheck and what you can't, but you can go to my
computer, double click on adminstative tools, double click
on services, then select what you want to stop, right
click on that selection, then click stop. You'll need to
reboot. If you have any trouble with system or program
then you will need to go back and click on "restart".
I'll tell you something else. I found I was having trouble
with the system being slow and the trouble was spyware. I
don't know why anyone on the internet is allowed to put
spyware on our disks and cause problems like it does, but
if you don't have a spyware program, try "SpybotSD". You
can get it off the internet and its free, so don't get it
from anyone trying to charge. Run it regularly. Set the
option to 'exclude the manufacturer' MicroSoft. MicroSoft
is good and security updates are sometimes put in the
registry. You'll be shocked to see how much spyware is on
your disk.
256 Mg is good. 512 is better and memory will improve the
operation of your computer, but spyware will kill you.
And, if you get some of the 'services' stopped at startup,
things should improve for you. good luck.
