Shell restarts several times an hour

I'm getting what I'm told are "shell auto-restarts" -- the explorer
blinks black, the CPU goes "thunk", the desktop comes back, and the
icons in the task tray reappear, one by one.

I ran chkdsk /f, and it's helped a little bit. Norton Disk
Doctor 2002 says I've got "errors in the master file table's (MFT)
BITMAP attribute" and that I need to correct errors in the "Volume
Bitmap". It says there are problems with the file system.
I have let it "fix" the errors, and it has reduced the blackouts
from 30 times an hour to about 10 times an hour.
How can I fix it completely?
