Hi jagginess,

thx for your great post. mountvol helped me a lot solving my backup
problems.

Windows XP recovery console does not support mountvol ( sux ) but for
those who don't wanna by WinInternals heres a suggestion.
Do not mount "Docs & Settings" to a different drive. Instead, mount
that drive to another folder ( named whatever you like, e.g. d:\Home
).
Copy ALL files of your "Docs & Settings" to the desired location, i.e.
d:\Home.
Change registry settings for all users to point to that new location
EXCEPT for the "Administrator".
Change profiles directory and assorted stuff in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList .
Also change the entries for profiles listed below this key, BUT
once again, MAKE SURE that 'ProfileImagePath' of the Administrators
account still points to it's original location.
If you restore your system partition at a later point in time, the
mount points are lost. If you boot up 'Safe mode with Command Prompt',
the Administrator account is accessible ( as it's on the original
place ) and you can complete your work of mounting your drive to
d:\Home again.

Good luck
Christian

p.s. no warranty on this ;-)
