XP randomly loses personal settings

My wife's laptop occasionally loses its desktop/personal
settings, and up pops the very first XP desktop (the
hillside, blue sky, and the trash can on the lower right
corner). Also, the Welcome to XP bubble pops up from the
system's tray.
Doing a system restore seems to be working, but this
happens at least once per week (daily use of the laptop,
no more than two hours per day).
There are four "accounts" in this machine; two
adminstrators (my wife and I) and two ...not
administrators (I forget the name) for the kids. No one
else has experienced this problem.
