Re: Multi CPUs Not Shown

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I just did a clean install of Windows after having unusual
instabilities and operations after upgrading my MoBo, memory and
processor. I was hoping to cure the instabilities that had been
seen but I am still having trouble after the reformat and
reinstallation.

It is not clear if these issues are connected so I will list them.

1. On rebooting sometimes all four of the processors in my PenomII
X4 920 are shown in Task manager (properly) ... other times only
one processor is shown and the system is noticably slower and more
heavily loaded per the performance tab in Task Manager.

2. Sometimes my displays "hiccup" on about 4 second intervals ...
sometimes they are stable (normal). I have two displays running on
the MoBo's internal Radeon 3200HD chip set, one on the DVI and one
on the SVGA connector. (I have updated the drivers to the latest
from ATI) By hiccup, I mean that the entire window jumps about 1/8
of an inch in the vertical direction and a few lines of blue are
shown at the top of the displays. This does not seem to happen
during BIOS polling but begins immediately when the Windows logo
appears during the boot process. Changing display refresh rate or
resolution also changes the frequency of the hiccup but does not
correct the problem.

3. Occationally my system hangs and becomes completely
unresponsive to the keyboard or mouse and must be rebooted.

As indicated, I thought that these might have been due to some
issues with the HAL after the upgrade from an Athlon 64 X2 4200+
and ECS MoBo. So I "bit the bullet" and did a complete reinstall
of XP and MoBo drivers, etc. after formatting the hard drive.

I have checked the BIOS for settings that might determine the
number of CPUs recognized or the timing of memory or video display
operation. All are set for "nominal" or "auto" and the processor
seems to be recognized during system post and in the properties of
"My Computer" even when Task Manager does not display all four CPUs.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Have the motherboard/CPU replaced - one or the other (perhjaps even the
memory) could be defective.

Then again - how big and how new is your power supply?
