Re: Add or Remove Programs not showing all installed programs

No, what I am saying is that it will not allow me to reinstall the old

support confirm that it will not overwrite the current installation.
So until I can get it removed I am stuck.

Help! My QuickBooks program failed today and when I tried to
remove and reinstall it was not listed in the Control Panel/Add
or Remove Programs list. I then saw that a lot of my other
programs are not listed either such as my Zone Alarm Anti Virus.
I am logged in as the administrator on my computer and have
Windows XP Service pack 2 with all the updates. These programs
are all registered with the manufacturer. Intuit (Quickbooks)
can't help me unless I can uninstall the corrupt version.
Do I need to reinstall XP?

Probably not, IF everything is working OK. Try reinstalling the
old version, restart, and then see if it's in add/remove. If so,
you're all
set.

It sounds like there may be corruption though; there IS a way to
"fix up"
the add/remove but I can't find it right now; perhaps someone will
chime in
with it.

For grins, take a look at your Even Viewer and see if it's full of
error
messages. If so, depending on what they are, it might be easier to
just do
a reinstall. Then again, if everything works, well ... who knows
for sure?

Unfortunately I can't re-install the program. It will only do so if
the old version is removed. I get a message saying that there is
already a version of the program on the machine. If I can't fix
control panel then I will have to find another uninstall utility
and try that.

No: reinstall the OLD program; it should allow you to install it
over itself, very likely. THEN try to Remove it & via add/remove.

Have you looked in the program folder in Program Files to see if it has an
uninstaller there?

You -could- manually uninstall it, but it's a little work and requires
fiddling with the registry. Are you up to that? BUT ...

You very likely have OTHER issues that are the likely culprit here. I'll
bet that's not the only app you can't install, especially if things are
missing from the add/remove. THAT is the first thing for you to address, or
you could end up with a lot more headaches.
For one thing, I'd backup all your important data NOW and keep it updated
until you get this straightened out.

One thing you can try, just in case something has marked them as "hidden" or
someone has played with some policies, is below:
---- start ------
To add additional components to the Add/Remove Programs list (Windows
Components):

Tools/Folder Options/View/Show Hidden Files and Folders and Show Extensions
for known file types. Then go to Windows Explorer/Inf Folder/Sysoc.inf
(Double Click it). You will find several lines that include the word 'hide'.
Simply remove the word 'hide' (but leave the comma). Save and exit. From
there you will be able to remove it from add/remove.

Add and Remove - Show All Files

Windows XP doesn't let you add or remove all the programs it installs by
default. Multimedia applications, the XP messenger, games, accessories, and
accessibility options do not show up in the Add/Remove Programs dialog box.
What if you want to get rid of them? Here's how to make Windows treat these
applications just like it treats all the others.

Go to Windows Explorer/Inf. In the right pane, scroll down to sysoc.inf,
double click it. Scroll down to:

[Components]
NtComponents=ntoc.dll,NtOcSetupProc,,4
WBEM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wbemoc.inf,hide,7

MSWordPad=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wordpad.inf,HIDE,7
ZoneGames=zoneoc.dll,ZoneSetupProc,igames.inf,,7

1. The word "HIDE" in an entry hides that application from your
Add/Remove Programs dialog box. To add games to the Add/Remove menu, delete
the word HIDE from its entry (but leave the commas that surround it). You
also have to remove "HIDE" from "AccessUtil=" for this tip to work.

2.. Save the file. Check for the new entries in the Add/Remove Programs
dialog box after you restart your computer.
-------------- end ---------------------------

The links in this are all dead I think, bnt it's still a usable document,
especially if it turns out that's your only problem. Be VERY careful
messing around in the registry!
