Re: Web links on desktop keep losing custom Icons for ugly blue E

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

If your customer wants to use custom icons, without interference from the OS, they really need to create a folder that contains all of the custom icons and use the change icon feature to reference one of the icons in that folder.

To collect all of the custom icons for that folder, you can use a program called FavOrg. This program will search all of the websites in your Favorites and download all of the custom icons for these websites.

Go to the following website:

Scroll down to Line 108, right side. Click the "FavOrg-Restore and Save Favorite Icons" link to download the program. Unzip the file and run the Setup.exe to install. Read the Help file for instructions.

I have a customer who has about 20 different links to web sites on his
desktop. He likes to have the Icons for these links to be whatever is
embedded in the web site, NOT the big blue "e". So he right clicks
goes to properties and change Icon and bing bang boom, instead of a
big "e" for his Google shortcut he has the Google Icon Logo etc. All
worked well for many months then all of a sudden all the web links
went back to the big "e", and would not change back. After some
research a MS knowledge base article was found that said to drop to
16 bit color change the Icons, and them go back to 32 bit color at
which time the Icons would actually change to the web site Icon. The
article also talked about a shelliconcach setting in the registry,
which was not there and I had to add. It also talked about deleting
the shelliconcach file, which turned out in this case not to be
called shelliconcache, but I believe something.db.

Well although the Icons would change to the desired custom logos ect
after going back to 32 bit color, on reboot they would all be "e"
again.

Does anyone have any ideas on how get around or fix this bug.

Thanks for your help,
