Re: copy xp install?

My old computer is sick -- dying, I think. Motherboard problem. It has XP Pro on it (and ME and W2K also), and for whatever dumb reasons, XP runs from the H: drive.

The whole hard drive in the old machine is 40 gig, so I picked up an external drive and instead of playing with Ghost or other backup schemes, I just created a half dozen folders on the external drive and used xxcopy to basically copy everything on the HD to the external drive.

Then I bought a new computer with Media Center edition on it, partitioned the drive, and have copied everything that was on the old H: drive to the H: partition on the new computer.

I edited boot.ini on the C: drive so that it would show the two XP installs and allow booting into either. I can select the Media Center bootup, so I haven't broken anything, but when I try to get to the XP Pro install on the H: drive, I get a message that in \windows\system32\config there is some kind of problem. Hitting any key sends me back to the boot menu.

I need to know what to do next. Any advice is welcome.

Perform a repair install on the XP Pro. The hardware is very different between the two machines. You may lose the dual boot setup when doing the repair and have to set it up manually after the repair. You will also have to be very careful that you pick the right installation during the repair. It is very possible that you won't be able to get it to work because of the way you transferred the system. An imaging program would have been a better method. In any case you should use an imaging program to image the whole system before attempting the repair. The repair may break both installations.

Another consideration is licensing. If the old installation is an OEM version or if you are still using the old computer then you are breaking the terms of the license.
