RE: Changing My Documents to Point to a File Share

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Hi Vincent -

Yes, I was aware of the Group Policy setting to keep Offline Files from
happening automatically.

I guess the reason I posted here is to make people aware that the My
Documents folder is considered to be a "Redirected Folder" even when you
manually point it to a network location; in other words - not through the
Group Policy Redirected Folders option.

I was also hoping for a confirmation that this is expected behavior.

Thanks.

Hi,

To make sure if the redirected folder will become an Offline Files folder,
you can configure the "Do not automatically make redirected folders
available offline" policy.

You can follow these steps to configure the
policy:

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and
then click "Active Directory Users and Computers".

2. In the left pane, locate the domain or organizational unit (OU) in
which the policy you want to edit is applied.

3. Right-click the domain or OU, and then click Properties.

4. Click the Group Policy tab.

5. Click the GPO, and then click Edit. A new window opens.

6. In the left pane, expand the following items:

- User Configuration

- Administrative Templates

- Network

- Offline Files

7. Double-click "Do not automatically make redirected folders available
offline".

8. Click Not Configured.

9. Click OK.

10. Close the Group Policy window.

Good luck!

Hi -

I was aware that if you use Folder Redirection in a Group Policy, that
the
Offline Files option is enabled by default for My Documents or whatever
folders you redirect on Windows XP.

Recently, I have had to convert a department to use home folders and to
change My Documents to point to the user's home folder. I didn't notice
until someone pointed it out, that Offline Files got turned on
automatically
for My Documents once we changed it to point to the network location. We
don't want to use Offline Files so I will have to go back and change each
workstation manually (or possibly use a GPO if we can get them in the
same
OU).

My interpretation of the term "Folder Redirection" was that it is a Group
Policy setting. Should I consider the changing of My Documents to point
to a
network share to be Folder Redirection as well? In other words,
symantics or
a bug?

Thanks.
