Re: Regedit has been disabled

That was my orignal thougth also, I ran scans when I first noticed the
problem. I updated everything and reran the scans today. Norton for Virus and
Webroot and Spybot for spyware. Nothing showed up other then the usual
cookies.

I rebooted and retired the fixes all with the same negative result.

First, get rid of whatever malware you have on your machine.

Update your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

Update whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

I tired the methods in both articles, rebooting after each attempt and
still get the eror mesg tat regedit has been disabled by the
adminstrator. Trying to launch the group policy editor (GPEDIT.MSC) a
screen flashes quickly and closes.

So I'm still stuck, I appreciate your suggestions.

Did you reboot???

Registry Editing has been disabled by your administrator
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakuirest.htm

Or...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
213. Disable or Enable Registry Editing Tools

Click on Enable
for disableregistrytoolsundo.reg

Right click disableregistrytoolsundo.reg and Select Merge.

Does the VBS script have more high priority that registry restrictions?

No. But if Registry Editing has been disabled in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableRegistryTool
you cannot use regedit.exe to change the setting.

If a user tries to start a registry editor while the value of this entry
is 1, a message appears explaining that a policy prevents the action.

If XP Pro, Group Policy (gpedit.msc)..
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\
Disable registry editing tools

[[Disables the Windows registry editors, Regedit.exe and Regedt32.exe.

If this setting is enabled and the user tries to start a registry
editor, a message appears explaining that a setting prevents the action.

To prevent users from using other administrative tools, use the "Run only
allowed Windows applications" setting. ]]

Regedt32.exe is a small program that just runs Regedit.exe.

You Have to use a script or a reg.exe.

Ran the script and it said that regedit tools are enabled but when I run
regedit from the command line it still says it is disabled. Is there
another step necessary to turn on regedit?

Thanks

Trying to fix the Task Manager disabled issue and found that Regedit

Try here: http://www.dougknox.com/security/scripts_desc/regtools.htm

Also, can I reload XP from the CD without wiping out all of my data?

Only by doing a repair installation, which you say you've already done.
