Re-labeling DVD Drive Icons

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

We are having a problem renaming (re-labeling) our DVD drive icons on an HP
Media Center PC running Windows XP Media Center. Initially, we had icons in
'My Computer' for one hard drive, two DVD drives, and four Media Reader
Drives. We repartitioned the hard drive and added 3 more logical drives.
We reassigned all drive letters so that the logical drives would follow the
primary hard drive partition.

In the process, we also gave the DVD drives and Media Reader drives more
intuitive names. This way their icons in 'My Computer' would be better
described than with the original labels. The media reader drive icons could
be 'Renamed' from the context menu in 'My Computer,' while the DVD drive
icons had to be changed from the 'Properties' dialog on the context menu
(there is no RENAME option).

All went well until we noticed that we had somehow given the two DVD drive
icons names that were actually for the readers and vice-a-versa. We renamed
the media reader drive icons with no problem, but when we went to rename the
DVD drive icons from their 'Properties' dialog, as before, we could not
rename them. It is as if the icon name listed on the 'General' tab of the
'Properties' dialog has been locked. We can type, but nothing shows.

How can we unlock the DVD drive icon properties, in 'My Computer,' so that
we can change the names? We realize that this name changes temporarily
while a DVD/CD is inserted in the drive. We are talking about the default
name or label for the icon when it is empty.
