Modem speaker volume

Dial-up modem connects on an XP PC (WP2). However, although the modem
properties show the modem volume is turned up, when connecting using either
by going into Outlook Express or Internet Explorer and clicking on the
connect box, there is no sound from the modem. Before I showed her this
shorter way to connect on this (friend's) PC, she used to dial by
START\CONNECT USING and the modem sound was fine (still is). Sound is on
everywhere, speakers work OK but no dial sound from modem! Ideas, please?
