Re: SP2 makes XP-Home/SP1 CD useless - other PC problems.

Free..

Re. the OS, I don't remember suggesting that your version is pirated.. re.
Win 98, you told us at some point that you had run the OS for some seven
years, so it was assumed that you may have upgraded at some point in time..

Ensure that you use an HDD diags program to write zeros to the drive.. the
action will ensure that there is no vestige of any former installation.. you
should then do a fresh install.. change no default settings after
installation.. install SP2..

With XP and SP2 installed, connect to the internet and download updates..
this will prove to you that it is possible to get updates with SP2 in place,
just like a whole bunch of others do..

Then install all of your other stuff.. for sure it will take a while, but at
least your system will be working as it should.. if, at any point during the
installation of other software, the computer refuses to access update sites,
you will have a better idea of what is causing the problem..

You can then go to PC Pitstop and check out your machine..

The fact that your camera/scanner wizard no longer works suggests problems
and there may be other functions that you have yet to encounter that also
may not work.. have you tried System Restore?.. if that doesn't work, you
may well have a trojan ore some other nasty lurking in your system..

Re. security settings, they should be set to medium.. if you have tried
changing settings, and there is no ostensible difference in behaviour,
again, a worm or trojan could be responsible..

I assume that your default browser is IE6.. some other browsers do not allow
Windows Updates, and presumably other updates too..

You might also want to disable crap like McAfee Privacy service or any other
third party program of that nature.. other toolbars that may be duplicating
settings that do not allow popups are Yahoo and MSN toolbars.. they should
be discarded.. you might also check that your av or firewall isn't
introducing settings that may stop downloads.. also check that the Windows
Update site is allowed..

Hopefully, you will be able to display this page from the PC Pitstop
website.. it will test and help you to enable ActiveX..

If I can find out more, or think of something new for you to try, I will
post back here..
