Can't install printer

Ever since instqlling SP2, I've had some issues with hardware. For example,
my DVD drive no longer works. When opening My Computer, teh drive isn't
even visible.

This evening I tried to install a new printer but can't. I get a message
that "The Windows Installer could not be accessed. This can occur if you
are using Windows in safe mode or if the Windows Installer is not correctly
installed. Contact your support personnel for instructions."

I had some issues installing SP2. The cmputer would be very slow when
hitting the Start button or any of the options available from there, though
my applications worked fine and browsing the Internet was OK. The only way
I was able to make SP2 work was to unlcik the "Shell Hardware Protection"
serivce. COuld that be part of my problems now using some hardware and
trying to install the printer?
