I'm assuming that XP was not the operating system that was originally
installed on your system and I'm also assuming your system meets XP's
minimum requirements for installation. That said, before you tried to run
installation, with your system booted to your previous setup, did you first
run the upgrade advisor. If not, return to your previous setup, once
installed, place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup screen appears,
select "Check System Compatibility."
If the setup screen does not appear but the drive in which you placed the CD
works for other CDs, my guess would be your XP setup disk is damaged in
which case you can get a replacement from Microsoft:
