winxp won't boot normal or in safe mode (no icons or taskbar)

thanks, I will try what you recommend. I'll let you know
if that fixes it. If not, I'll have to search for my CD
to repair. I tried to repair from safe mode with command
prompt and the restore window comes up but nothing in it.
