Re: can't delete shell extensions.dll

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

hi ??ç?l,

thank you again but still cannot delete the shell ext.dl. apparently some
here think i am lazy since they lay claim i do not first try & find out;
partly true, in that i have a 4th recurrence of cancer & 5th set of
treatments & time is not always my friend, but when i do feel less ill &
less tired, i do google, but most of it is still in pc speak i do not
understand, so i come here. as far as my posts beoing off topic, admittedly,
some may have been, yet there has been & will always be others here off
topic too, but since the posters of such didn't speak up, they are not
treatewd sarcastically or worse, avoided.

i would guess some here may know somehting about the shell ext.dll or the
auto fill of usernames or passwords, but as you may or may not have noticed,
they are ignoring me, I am only here for help, but apparently when someone
calls out one of theirs, even tho' he was wrong, with his sarcastic posts,
they stand together; sad when this is a place to help fellow pc'ers & again,
i am not the only one who posted a bit off topic, as there have been far
worse, that went unbothered, but because i stand up for myself, they get
down on me. guess i will never understand that mind set under which they
seem to be working. and again i bring up, luke 6:31; my god people, i hope
you don't treat your family & friends such as this; i mean if a loved one
asked something not related to one's family, would they just ignore them, or
worse, become sarcastic with them ? i guess i was raised differently, to
treat everyone fairly & with respect. sad to see this is where the world has
come for many, to be a self centered, self absorbed narcissistic society.
and i thought only cliques onlyy existed on the playgrounds of our youth. i
mean, we are adults & time has long ago passed to have abandonded thjose
childish games. are my posts hurting anything, anything at all here / no, so
if one is off topic, if it cn help others, then whats the big deal ? or of
it only helped one person me, that's a problem ? i mean this is for basics,
tho' there have been many a post of things not solely germane to winxp;
fonts, cookies, sata, win 2000, printing email, & on & on, yet none of those
were treated rudely & rightly so. but mione they did as i told off tom for
being sarcastic, but apparently it's okay for him to be nasty & rude.

i want to same with the same bunch of people so there is more familiarity &
not have to be told to " go to www.google.com" ot told to try & fonts,
cookies, sata, etc. ng's.

how sad

but again, i thank you for doing what this place is supposed to be, helping
others & thankfully you don't fall into that attitude of theirs

Doesn't hurt to try:

If you are running SP2, open IE--->Tools--->Manage Add-ons, and uncheck
any
BHO's that you don't recºgnize.
<http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/data/addons.htm>

You can also use the System Explorers in Microsoft Antispyware to look at
BHO's and block them--it also shows known and unknown fºr BHO's..

Hi Dallas,

Sorry, I'm out of ideas. At this point, I would seriously consider a
clean install.... but before that, other folks may have additional
ideas
for
you; hope this helps a bit, take a look at this

hi ??ç?l,

thanks but even your good luck wishes were not enough, so far that
is!

i did all you said, entered in safe mode to run the uninstaller, but
whether i signed in w/ my username or as administrator, it kept saying
i
had
no internet connection for anything i tried; ie & outlook express. so
i
logged out 7 again back in & tried the uninstaller in the normal mode,
but
of all the programs it had listed, none were either the adaware of
lavasoft.
i tried the search mode as well - no dice.(pssst, bet you wish now you
wouldn't have stepped up to help me!)

i did the ccleaner & the shell ext.dll is still there - whew !

thanks again & if still interested in helping , any other ideas ?

Hi Dallas,

Restart the computer into Safe Mode to then eradicate the pest

Safe mode prevents some, but by no means all--spyware services from
running.
It is an excellent way to get started if something is resistant to
cleaning
in normal mode, but it may not be all that is needed.

In Safe mode try to remove it with Revo Uninstaller, then run
CCleaner's
registry cleaner.

<http://www.revouninstaller.com/>
Try in Tools -> Optimization -. Junk Files Cleaner - Scan - Delete

<http://www.ccleaner.com>
Note, uncheck Yahoos Toolbar

Download the basic version via
<http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx>
The basic version does not contain the disgusted Toolbar
The best part is that it's fast! (normally taking less than a second
to
run)
and Free.

Uncheck:

In the INTERNET EXPLORER:
Last Download Location .- Uncheck
Autocomplete Form History .- Uncheck

In the WINDOWS EXPLORER:
Recent Documents .- Uncheck

In the SYSTEM:
Clipboard .- Uncheck
Memory Dumps .- Uncheck
Windows Log Files .- Uncheck
Start Menu Shortcuts .- Uncheck
Desktop Shortcuts .- Uncheck

In the UTILITIES category, uncheck WindowsDefender. Having this
checked
removes the history of when the last scan was run.

DO NOT USE ANY Advanced cleaning options.
Make sure you go to Options > Advanced and uncheck the box to "
Only
delete
files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours" before running
a
scan.

Suggest saving the changes until you get to know it and feel
comfortable.

And remove all temporarily junk.

Good luck

well, 3rd time is a charm, i guess. i had a dr's appt. & left the
scan
running & when i checked it, it gave the results - no spyware or
malware - &
when I clicked next, that is the page the prior 2 scans defaulted
to
without
the results page.
so when i feel better, later i hope, i will try the installation
again.
well, before that, i will try & delete the shell extension dll as
that
must
be what is holding up the installation of a new one

let me do that now & report the results of that.

nope, that didn't resolve it either as it says the same as i
posted
previously. "that i cannot delete shell extensions.dll & it tells
me
something about making sure the disk is not full or write protected
or
that
the file is not
in use."

thanks again but let me ask you this; in running the onecare live
scanner,
is it supposed t show the results of the scan ? I ask as i have
now
ran
it
twice, but left the room each time as it takes a long, long time
to
run,
but when i return, it is finished & defaults to the next page but
I
see
no
results or even a results page of the scan. or does it remove
whatever
automatically ? i think it would give the results of the scan -
so
what
am
i doing wrong ? i mean, i just start it, leave, come back & no
results

thanks

Hello Dallas,

It seems possible that your Windows installation has
been deliberately damaged by a trojan
(Vundo, along any uninvited guests.
(SDBot and ZLOB, all protected by a rootkit.)) so as to prevent
you
updating
your system or
removing the trojan.

Scan your computer now online and clean it for free!

hey all, hope your sundays are going well. for some reason,
when i
went
to
run avg's a/v & ad-aware, they both had issues; one said no
connection.
anyway, i decided to remove them & reinstall; that didn't work
so
i
installed avira a/v instead., but when i get to the install
portion
of
ad-aware, it keeps saying "the source installation package for
the
product
ad-aware is out of sync with the client package. try installing
again
using
a valid copy of the install package ad-aware.msi.

so i try & delete the few remaining files in explorer of the
old
ad-aware &
it keeps saying cannot delete shell extensions file.dll.

i googled it & found many programs to remove dlls but don't
want
to
get
into
that.

so not sure how both it & avg had issues this morning, but i
could
not
get
avg back & installed the other & now have the issues you see
described
above.

any ideas as to how to get this d/l'ed & installed or know of
another
to
use instead of avg ?
