How can I add a mini icon to the tool bar?

First right click on and blank part of the task bar and go up to the
Toolbar menu item and make sure that there's a checkmark beside the
Quick Launch toolbar.  Then just drag and drop as many icons to the
quick launch toolbar that you desire...

I tried but it didn't work.
Is there something wrong with my computer?

First, you need to clarify exactly which toolbar you're talking about, as
asked earlier.

I misnamed the bar. I should have called it the task bar.
It is the bar between "Start" & the clock at the bottom of the window.

If you right the Start button, choose properties, Taskbar tab, do you
see the Show Quick Launch check box? Check it if it is not.

If you check it and uncheck it, the picture of the Taskbar appearance
should change back and forth as a before and after shot showing quick
launch icons (not mini icons) and not showing quick launch. Do you
see that? Leave the Show Quick Launch box checked to show the Quick
Launch Toolbar. The Appearance picture should be showing icons for
Internet Explorer and Show Desktop.

On the same tab, uncheck the Lock the taskbar checkbox and watch the
picture. One picture will have the vertical lines and one picture
will not. Flip back and forth to see it. These are like "handles" to
slide the Quick Launch area wider or narrower.

When you see both the Quick Launch icons and the vertical lines and
the Appearance picture and it looks right, click Apply or OK. That is
what your Taskbar should look like now. Also choose Keep the Taskbar
on top of other windows for now.

If you still don't see the stuff put your cursor in an unused area on
the top edge of the Taskbar and it should change to a vertical double
arrow and you can grab it and expand the height of your Taskbar or
make it regular size (or not visible at all). If this doesn't work,
your Taskbar is still locked so something is wrong. The Appearance
picture must be right. If it isn't, start over.

It is possible your handles are so screwed up from previous dragging
that they overlap or are on top of each other. making the Taskbar
wider vertically may help you see them and drag them so they look more
like the Appearance picture. Then you can shrink it back down to one
unit deep and lock it. Try to get it to look like the Appearance
picture you saw before. You should probably only have to use the
right handle.

When it is right, you should see from left to right, Start button,
vertical bar, some icons, vertical bar.

When it is all set, make the Taskbar Quick Launch area nice and wide
by dragging the right handle towards the clock area and drop it. Drag
and drop the icons you want there from the desktop or a folder into
the Quick Launch area. You can also delete icons from here by right
clicking and deleting it. This will not delete any programs, just the
icon from the Quick Launch area. Drag the right handle right and left
until you can see everything, then I like to snug it up.

When you are done, go back and lock the Taskbar. The Appearance
picture should change to no vertical lines (with only two example
icons). Click Apply or OK and your Taskbar should be locked with no
vertical lines.
