What you downloaded was a test of the how much time it would take to
download the.
It will fail if you try to install it (which I mentioned not to install),
no harm done.

Now that I know your Internet connection speed
is not all that bad I'll recommend the "bootstrapper"
versions for most of what you need to download.

What is the "bootstrapper" version, basically it's a small
(about 2MB) file that you download and run.
After you start the bootstrapper program it initiates the
download and installation of the .Net service pack over the Internet.

This means you need to remain connected to the Internet
for the entire time required to install the service pack which
could be 20 minutes or more. If this is a problem let me know.

The up side is the bootstrapper only downloads the components
that are need for your PC, so the amount of data/files downloaded
could be less that if you where to download the complete/entire
service pack file to your hard drive.

Do me a favor, since you only have a DSL Internet connection, download
the NDP20SP2-KB958481-x86.exe (8.6MB) file mentioned below and see how
much time it takes. Report the time in minutes back to me. Just download
and time it, do not install the Family Update just yet.

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for Windows XP x86, and
Windows Server 2003 x86

Just scroll down the web page to the section titled: "Files in This

You should see three files listed, the one you want to download is:

OK, know that I have your list the question is:
Just how far/much do you want to update?
For example:
Net Framework 1.1 is now at Service Pack 1
Net Framework 2.0 is now at Service Pack 2
Net Framework 3.0 is now at Service Pack 2

The list above also does not include the Family update
for 2.0 and 3.0

I can supply you with a list of the download file sizes
if you want them.

OK, grab a paper and pen and go to the Control Panel/Add or Remove
Programs and write down each version of .NET listed.

Use this article as an aid to help identify each version:
"How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are
installed and whether service packs have been applied:"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785

Once you have your list, download this .ZIP file and run the
executable it contains.
.NET Framework Setup Verification Tool:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8999004.aspx
"This .NET Framework setup verification tool is designed to
automatically perform a set of steps to verify the installation
state of one or more versions of the .NET Framework on a
computer."

You will find a pull down in this tool so you can run the
verification process on each version you have identified.
If all your versions (identified in this list you created) of .NET
pass, then start with the lowest version installed on your PC and
the install the service pack (if it not installed)

If a version "Fails" the test then uninstall that version and
reinstall it.

This will bring your PC up to date (Less the large .NET
3.5 SP1 download)

Note: When installing each of these Service Packs even
though
the status may indicate the installation has completed and
may
ask you to restart your PC, keep an eye on the hard drive
light
activity or use 'Task Manager' until your PC shows no disk
activity
or task manager show the CPU is in a 'Idle' state for at
least
30 seconds to 1 minute before restarting/rebooting the PC.

Install order.
1) Net Framework Redistributable 1.0 SP2

3) NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

5) NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
(You indicated that you already have .Net 2.0 SP1
installed)

32 Bit Windows download File is named = NetFx20SP2_x86.exe
(Restart is required)

6) Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for Windows
XP x86, and Windows Server 2003 x86
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6c095bba-6100-4ec9-9c54-6450b0212565&displaylang=en&displaylang=en
Note: Disregard the title of the article.
Scroll down the web page to the section titled: "Files in
This Download"
You want the 32 Bit Windows download file named =
NDP20SP2-KB958481-x86.exe (8.6MB)
(This is the "Family Update" for .Net 2.0 SP2)

7) There is no stand alone .Net Framework 3.0 SP2 download
file, so you will not be able to
install the "Family Update" for .Net 3.0 as the Family
Update requires that 3.0 SP2 is installed before trying to
install the Family Update, and unfortunately the only way
to install .Net 3.0 SP2 is by downloading and installing
the .NET 3.5 SP1 update that you are trying to avoid.

If you use a Dial-up connection it could take that
long or more.
High speed internet service and the download time
will not
be all that bad.

After the download completes the installation does
take a while
so you should not use the PC for anything else until
the install
completes. Note: When you see the message that the
installation
has completed and you are asked to "Reboot/Restart"
your PC
wait until you see the hard disk activity stop and
stays idle
for at least 1 minute, then you can reboot.

Do you need this update: There is a lot of
discussion on
this but if you check the current versions of .NET
installed
on your PC (Control Panel, Add/Remove programs) then
based on what versions on .NET you have installed I
may
be able to save you some time and disk space.
