OK, grab a paper and pen and go to the Control Panel/Add or Remove
Programs and write down each version of .NET listed.
Use this article as an aid to help identify each version:
"How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and
whether service packs have been applied:"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785
Once you have your list, download this .ZIP file and run the executable it
contains.
.NET Framework Setup Verification Tool:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8999004.aspx
"This .NET Framework setup verification tool is designed to automatically
perform a set of steps to verify the installation state of one or more
versions of the .NET Framework on a computer."
You will find a pull down in this tool so you can run the verification
process on each version you have identified.
If all your versions (identified in this list you created) of .NET pass,
then start with the lowest version installed on your PC and the install
the service pack (if it not installed)
If a version "Fails" the test then uninstall that version and reinstall
it.

Ok, JS, here ya go:
* the update patch cannot be installed by the windows installer service
because the program to be upgraded may be missing, of the upgrade patch
may update a different version of the program. verify that the program to
be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade
patch *
ok, 1/2 of 100 words - eyes are as bad as the neuropathy laden hands
thanks js

i tried to attach a very small error message & it says "too large" !
what a crock as i never had this problem in the past as i could attach &
insert screen caps, but since i updated the Gadwin print screen program
it won't allow me to attach/insert anything !
anyway, i tried the first framework update & got a small error message
that something was not found that would allow it to install

Start at the top and if already installed just skip past what you
already have installed.

Here is a list of .Net Framework security updates.
Take note that not all apply to Windows XP and
not all are "English" language updates.
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=net%20framework%20security
Most likely these updates will also be available when you use
"Windows Update", unless you have them already installed.

This will bring your PC up to date (Less the large .NET 3.5 SP1
download)
Note: When installing each of these Service Packs even though
the status may indicate the installation has completed and may
ask you to restart your PC, keep an eye on the hard drive light
activity or use 'Task Manager' until your PC shows no disk
activity
or task manager show the CPU is in a 'Idle' state for at least
30 seconds to 1 minute before restarting/rebooting the PC.
Install order.
1) Net Framework Redistributable 1.0 SP2
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=3271ACD5-EE3C-4BDF-AE28-56D2DF77151E&displaylang=en
(Includes SP1)
2) Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 Service Pack 3:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6978D761-4A92-4106-A9BC-83E78D4ABC5B&displaylang=en
3) NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=A8F5654F-088E-40B2-BBDB-A83353618B38&displaylang=en
4) Net Framework 1.1 hotfix (kb886903)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=8EC6FB8A-29EB-49CF-9DBC-1A0DC2273FF9&displaylang=en
5) NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
(You indicated that you already have .Net 2.0 SP1 installed)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b2c0358-915b-4eb5-9b1d-10e506da9d0f&displaylang=en
32 Bit Windows download File is named = NetFx20SP2_x86.exe
(Restart is required)
6) Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for Windows XP x86,
and Windows Server 2003 x86
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6c095bba-6100-4ec9-9c54-6450b0212565&displaylang=en&displaylang=en
Note: Disregard the title of the article.
Scroll down the web page to the section titled: "Files in This
Download"
You want the 32 Bit Windows download file named =
NDP20SP2-KB958481-x86.exe (8.6MB)
(This is the "Family Update" for .Net 2.0 SP2)
7) There is no stand alone .Net Framework 3.0 SP2 download file,
so you will not be able to
install the "Family Update" for .Net 3.0 as the Family Update
requires that 3.0 SP2 is installed before trying to install the
Family Update, and unfortunately the only way to install .Net 3.0
SP2 is by downloading and installing the .NET 3.5 SP1 update that
you are trying to avoid.

add/remove re: the framework, but it said it was still too
large ! also, i cannot copy & paste from it, so when I get
back from my dr. appt. I'll try & write each one down for you,
unless you don't need them all.
Again, much thanks! Also, I appreciate your civility.

Great JS, thanks SO much ! Yea, I have DSL, but it's not the
fastest, but I
can go ahead & run it.
As far as the current Framework, I am trying to Post a screen
cap but got it too big - do you need all of them or the most
recent ?
Again, thanks

If you use a Dial-up connection it could take that long or
more.
High speed internet service and the download time will not
be all that bad.
After the download completes the installation does take a
while
so you should not use the PC for anything else until the
install
completes. Note: When you see the message that the
installation
has completed and you are asked to "Reboot/Restart" your PC
wait until you see the hard disk activity stop and stays
idle
for at least 1 minute, then you can reboot.
Do you need this update: There is a lot of discussion on
this but if you check the current versions of .NET installed
on your PC (Control Panel, Add/Remove programs) then
based on what versions on .NET you have installed I may
be able to save you some time and disk space.
