I checked out that link Olorin gave and it sucks. It's a pay for help site
that gives you a 7 day free trial. I'll never sign up for that.

Neither would I. My apologies to the OP; when I originally gave the link it
was one of the usual Experts Exchange pages and actually *did* give a
selection of answers IF you scroll right down past reams of off-putting
blurb to the bottom. I checked just now and it's changed and doesn't give
the discussions I originally pointed to.

A quick Google reveals sthda.sys to be a sound card driver file for your
Intel chip motherboard named C-Major Audio, from SigmaTel, Inc.

It seems that you may be on a Gateway system as they come with that
integrated sound card on the motherboard. If your system is a Gateway have
a look at the following forum discussion which contains a link to download
the drivers for the sound card.

http://www.notebookforums.com/thread188271.html

If your system isn't a Gateway, go to the web site for the manufacturer of
your pc or motherboard, and look in their Tech Support links for your
sound card driver download.

I need to find a
file 'sthda'sys' to continue installation.

Any MS people here know where I can get this file or if there is a way
around it?

With the minimal information you've provided (installation of what? what
is this to do with MS or XP?), all I can do is advise "Google is not your
enemy" at point you to, perhaps,
http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Windows/XP/Q_22918525.html
and suggest browsing the installation media (DVD, CD, floppy) that came
with whatever it is you're trying to install in case the file is tucked
away there somewhere.
