Try to use the recovery partition on my laptop

Hello,
I have a laptop (compaq presario V6000) and my wife could not boot it anymore. My wife went to the computershop and the people there told her we had to re- install Windows again. So she did.
Then i came home and was not so happy with this advice.....On the hard disk there is a partition called RECOVERY located on D:\.
Normally you can re-install Windows from this partition and it give's you back youre original settings like when the notebook was new. Now i can not choose to install from this partition because she reinstalled it from a normal Windows XP cd from the neighbours............So the link to this recovery in the boot menu is gone.
The recovery directory on D:\ is still there, but seems to bee empty. But when i try to view the files with the good old ATTRIB -H *.* then it shows 4 file names:
desktop.ini
warning.bmp
protect.ed
folder.htt
But these files are hidden and i can not do anything with them. (copy or what ever).
IS there anyone out here who can point me to a direction to solve my problem? As you can guess i didn't make a recovery disk (as i should have......)
Thanks in advance!
Best regards,
Rody
