Thanks all, I did this:-
Click [Start] [Run] and type control userpasswords2
Click [OK]
The [User Accounts] Property *** displays.
On [Users] tab, clear the [Users must enter a user name and password
to use this computer] check box.
Click [Apply].
Enter a user name and password that should be used to logon
automatically in the dialog box that appears.
and now it is working the way I wanted.

I have a laptop and a desktop. both running windows xp.
Both of them require me to click something before they will
continue to start up; that is to confirm I am the user or to log in
with my name. How can I change the settings to get the computer to
go right through the start up process without any additional steps
by me when I switch them on?
I am owner/administrator for both machines.
