What is it that runs before I log on?

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

I use XP SP2. I have Kaspersky antivirus and Diskeeper but neither are set
to run on boot. However when I do boot my hard disk light indicates
activity for perhaps 10 minutes after starting windows but not logging on.

Is this indicating that XP is running its Defrag program even although I
have Diskeeper installed or could it be somethnig else?
