Re: Computer slows down when trying to switch users

Joe

"When I double click the two pages logo, nothing happens." It does
happen. It is just that that there seems to be nothing happening. What
happens is that the whole text of the Report is added to your Clipboard.
If you have any empty document open and place the cursor in the
document, right click and select paste it pastes the report into your
document. You are not the first to not realise what is happening.

Hundreds of Event Viewer Reports! Yes but most will be before the last
last boot and most of the remainder will be Information Reports. We are
only interested in Warning and Error Reports for the last boot.

Hello Gerry,
I have completed all of the tasks listed and still no improvement.
Thanks for everyones help, any other ideas?

Joe

After a new installation you need to CleanUp and run Disk
Defragmenter.

You can use cCleaner (freeware) which does a more thorough job than
Disk CleanUp.
http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp
http://www.ccleaner.com/

With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. To be safe you
should create a restore point before using cCleaner. cCleaner also
offers backup before removal.

When using cCleaner think twice before checking Autocomplete Form
History under Internet Explorer. You do get a warning but this one
has irritating consequences. You may need to restore your system's
recollection of passwords after use so keep a record off computer so
that they can easily be re-entered.

Leave the Scan for Issues option alone.

Try also Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest
System Restore points?
cCleaner does not deal with Restore Points.

A solution that often helps with a slow shutdown.

Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
Download details: User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

UPHClean v1.5e readme.txt
http://snipurl.com/ko8m

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space. Right click on
your C drive in Windows and select Properties to get this
information.

How much RAM memory?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear
in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which
appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close
Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the
body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting
from
Event Viewer.

Hello,
I have recently re-installed Windows XP Prof w/ SP2. I also
completely reformatted the hard drive so that it was back to blank
for the re-install of windows. However, I now have 2 problems. #1
being that it takes 2-5 minutes to switch users and that is when
only one person is logged on and you just want to go back to the
welcome screen. #2 is that the computer locks up when trying to
shut down or restart. It will go as far as Saving Your Settings and
then stays there for hours.

I'm using Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite, Ad Aware 2007 and
Spybot S&D. All show that everything is clean. Why is my system
struggling with these two simple tasks? Any help PLEASE!!!
