Can someone please tell me how to disable Windows file Protection? I'm using F-Secure virus/etc. protection, and I've been advised to turn off WFP since my computer is now taking an AGE to start up. Apparently "this might cause System File Checker (sfc.exe) to go through certain DLL and EXE files at startup" which bogs things down.

Thanks,

Have you determined that sfc.exe is in fact running at startup? There are many reasons for a slow startup, and the System File Checker isn't even on my list of usual suspects.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

If you've determined that the machine is clean, do clean-boot troubleshooting:
