I have a Dell 260?? Optiplex from retrobox, system is ok. Hardware
wise.
In the middle of all this, I downloaded a ubuntu linux distribution,
burned the cd and loaded all the SW onto the PC with no incidents and
it worked fine. No glitches or hiccups.
I attend a college that has a software agreement with microsoft. We
can download ISO images and burn our own CDs for software. As I was
building a machine in order to take a graphics course, I downloaded
XP w/SP2. I burned my CD Rom.
During what seemed like a normal install, The machine had finished
copying all its files over and had rebooted ok. ( it had an XP screen
up during boot )The machine was resuming set up. A few seconds in
and a message pops up:
Error: D:\i386\asms Incorrect function.
I asked for and received a second download just in case I got garbled
the first time. Turned out I got the same error message the second
time.
After some internet searches, I tried to copy the files from the cd
to the hard drive. Windows repair allows one to see the cd and the c
drive at the same time. However, it does not understand xcopy so I
could copy a set of files. So I inserted "The village idiots boot
disk" and tried to do what one microsoft problem fix told me to do.
A copy of the execuatble for xcopy was on the floppy After several
tries, I could not achieve an install.
Any suggestions from the folks?
Just got back from getting it to load.
We tested the machine with multiple OS installs, and it passed all
with flying colors. Finally took it into the PC networks Lab and
set it up on the bench.
With a known good CD ( installs had been done with it ) the install
worked perfectly. No glitches or hoops or sploots.
Tested My install cd against it. My CD was burned using Nero at 8x
speed. Data Verification was turned on.
out of all the files, 20 were missing. 6 were present but
truncated. My Sun Admin days saw me burning at 1x no matter what.
It was insurance to get a working CDROM. I am brand new to Nero and
could not find a neat way to drop the drive speed. If someone does -
post it here.
I handed my cdrom to the sys Admin here, and he can find the missing
files on his box and my iso, which leaves burn to be questionable.
