Most computer mftrs. load up their machines with all sorts of OEM
garbage, trial programs, updaters, etc. that are all running in the
background. Many computer mftrs. also include trial versions of Norton
or McAfee antivirus/security programs which are known system hogs.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove items you know you don't want. Then
manage your startup items by 1) changing the "start with Windows"
setting from within the various programs' Options; 2) and if #1 isn't
available for a specific program use the System Configuration Utility
(see below).

If this isn't something you feel comfortable doing, there's no shame in
admitting this isn't your cup of tea. Take the machine to a local
professional (not some BigStoreUSA place) and have them do it for you.
It will not take long and you will be amazed at the speed of your new
machine.

Using the System Configuration Utility:

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab
and find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply
and OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you
do you'll get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box
that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop
processes. Instead, use Start>Run>services.msc [enter]

If you see AdobeUpdate.exe running - kill it , delete it from the
registry and the executable from the disk, and do your Adobe updates
manually.

They claim to nave no problem that has not been corrected, but it
killed me.
